What is Pastel Nagomi Art?

A gentle Japanese pastel art painted with fingertips instead of brushes. It is calming to create, lovely to bring home, and open to complete beginners aged 9 and above.

Of everything we host at Nurture Play, Pastel Nagomi Art is the one that makes people pause: an art form with no brushes, where soft clouds of colour are blended directly with your fingertips. If you have never heard of it, here is a gentle introduction, much like the art itself.

A gentle art from Japan

Nagomi Art comes from Japan, where “nagomi” speaks of harmony and calm. Artists scrape soft pastels into powder, pick up the colour on a fingertip and blend it onto paper in soft, luminous layers. Simple shapes and templates help each picture take form: a glowing moon, a field of flowers, a quiet sea.

The result has a dreamy, softly lit quality that is hard to achieve with any other medium, and surprisingly easy to reach on your very first try.

Art that feels like a deep breath

Because the colour is applied slowly, in small circular motions, the process itself is deeply calming. Many people describe it as art that feels like a deep breath. There is no rush and no pressure. The process rewards patience, close observation and the willingness to build an image one gentle layer at a time.

That gentle pace is part of what makes it such a lovely fit for children who find louder, faster activities overwhelming, and for busy grown-ups who could use an hour of quiet focus themselves.

No experience needed, really

Nagomi Art asks for no drawing skill and no artistic background. Step-by-step guidance gives beginners a calm, approachable way in, while every picture still leaves room for personal choices in colour and composition. Two people can follow the same steps and finish with pictures that are unmistakably their own. Everyone takes a finished artwork home.

Nurture Nagomi at Nurture Play

Our Nurture Nagomi workshops welcome everyone aged 9 and above, children and adults alike. Some of our loveliest sessions are shared ones, with a parent and child blending colours side by side.

Sessions are led by our Japan-certified Nagomi Art instructor, who guides everyone from an approachable first picture towards increasingly advanced work. Keep an eye on our announcements for the next workshop date. No experience is needed, just clean hands and a little curiosity.
